Letter to Crosby Herald/Formby Times/Maghull Champion
14th October 2008
Dear Sir/Madam,
Further to the four Conservative councillors who recently voted against Sefton becoming a Fairtrade Borough, I have been contacted by a number of people expressing both outrage and bewilderment.
One gentleman who has recently returned from Kenya and is hoping to set up business in the borough selling Fairtrade products could not understand the decision. In fact we both struggled to think of any reason why the Tories would block a move which seeks to empower developing country producers
The purpose of his visit was to reassure himself that before registering his business, the products were genuine and the money would get to the right people.
Surely we should be taking steps to encourage people with an entrepreneurial flair to set up their own businesses rather than petty political point scoring about a subject so serious.
I challenge Cllrs Parry, Griffiths, Barber and Storey to issue an apology for their actions which is adding further delay to the status being granted.
Or perhaps this is just another sign of things to come from Mr Cameron’s new modern day, caring Conservative party?
Yours sincerely,
Richard Clein
